Lawn Levelling: How to Fix a Bumpy Lawn (and When to Call a Pro)
A bumpy lawn is more than an eyesore. Dips collect water and turn to mud, high spots get scalped by the mower, and uneven ground is easy to trip on, especially for children. The good news is that most lawns can be levelled. The right method depends on how deep the problem goes.
Why lawns go uneven
Soil settling after building work, drainage or a buried tree stump
Poor preparation when the lawn was first laid
Heavy clay that shrinks in summer and swells in winter, common across Reigate, Redhill and much of Surrey
Wear from foot traffic, play equipment, pets and moles
Small dips (under 2cm): top dressing
For shallow unevenness, top dressing is the gentlest fix. In spring or early autumn, mow the lawn, then spread a thin layer of sandy top dressing or a sand and loam mix over the low areas. Work it into the grass with the back of a rake or a lute so the blades still poke through. Never bury the grass completely. Repeat every few weeks until the surface is level.
Deeper hollows (2 to 5cm): lift and fill
For deeper dips, cut an H shape through the turf with a spade, peel the flaps back, fill underneath with good topsoil, firm it down and lay the turf back over the top. Water it well. This keeps your existing grass but needs care to get a smooth finish.
When re-levelling and new turf is the better answer
If the whole lawn rolls, slopes the wrong way, holds water, or is more weeds and moss than grass, patching rarely lasts. The long-term fix is to strip the old lawn, regrade and level the soil properly, and lay fresh turf on a firm, even base. This is what we do on most of our jobs:
Remove the old lawn and any debris
Rotavate and break up compacted ground
Add quality topsoil where needed and grade the levels so water drains away from the house
Rake and roll the surface until it is firm and flat
Lay new turf with tight joints so every roll is in full contact with the soil
Done this way, the lawn stays level for years instead of sinking again after the first winter.
How much does lawn levelling cost?
DIY top dressing costs little more than a few bags of dressing. Full re-levelling with new turf depends on the size of the lawn, how much soil needs moving, and access. We include levelling and ground preparation in our turf laying quotes, which start from £23 per m² supplied and laid, with a local minimum of £350. See our prices page for a quick estimate.
